The 4 Levels of Freedom — Which Level Are You At?
We all talk about “freedom.”
But most of the time, freedom is just a vague feeling in our minds.
Recently, I started to realize that freedom can actually be broken down into different stages.
And each level brings a completely different way of living.
I’ve been traveling around the world for years.
Over time, I’ve tried different ways to support myself financially, while constantly chasing this idea of “freedom.”
And lately I’ve realized:
Freedom isn’t just a slogan — it evolves in levels.
---
## Level 1: The Freedom of Having Savings
The first level of freedom is having money in the bank — maybe around $10,000 or more.
Its biggest value isn’t spending power.
It’s the confidence that comes with it.
When your boss treats you badly, you can actually consider quitting.
When work becomes unbearable, you don’t immediately panic.
---
## Level 2: No Longer Depending Entirely on a Job
This is when your side income or passive income — especially income not tied to a fixed time or place — can already cover part of your living expenses.
Maybe your rent.
Maybe your daily costs.
What you gain at this stage is the freedom to take a gap.
You’re no longer fully defined by work.
You can consciously press pause on life.
You can travel, recharge, or seriously pursue things you truly care about.
You also no longer need to constantly overwork yourself just to survive.
---
## Level 3: Freedom of Location
This is a major turning point.
When your passive income, or a location-independent business, can fully cover your reasonable living expenses…
You gain true freedom of location.
You can move to a different city.
Travel long-term.
Stay wherever you genuinely enjoy being.
At this point, the world starts to open up to you.
---
## Level 4: Your Time and Space Fully Belong to You
At this level, your income mainly comes from:
- Passive income
- Products with near-zero marginal cost
- Sustainable systems that can operate automatically
And all of it consistently covers your living expenses.
What you truly gain here is both time freedom and location freedom.
From this point on, the motivation behind what you do is no longer survival.
It becomes:
Passion. Meaning. Curiosity. Life experience.
---
Beyond this point, many things are no longer about freedom — they’re about desire.
Of course, everyone wants a different kind of life.
But at least for me, those things are no longer what I want most.
If you’re also searching for a freer way of living, ask yourself:
Which level are you at right now?
And which level do you most want to reach first?
Let’s talk in the comments.
